SENTENCES

A sentence is a group of words that tells a complete thought.


1. Wendell and Floyd missed the math test.
2. Mona walked into the school office looking for her lucky hat.
3. Mulan fought for her country asking nothing in return.
4. Why did Mulan join the Chinese army?
5. The waterfall look beautiful!
6. Let’s climb the waterfall.

There are four kinds of sentences: statements, questions, exclamations and commands.


A statement is a sentence that tells something.  It ends with a period.


1. At the end of the story he boys became friends.
2. The Emperor wanted to reward Mulan for her bravery and loyalty.
3. The father did not want to climb the waterfall.


A question is a sentence that asks for information.  It ends with a question mark.


1. Who is Mona?
2. Why did Mulan have to buy weapons?
3. Where did the boy put the trunk?


An exclamation is a sentence that expresses an emotion.  It ends with an exclamation point.


1. We have no luck!
2. The soldiers were surprised when they 3. saw Mulan dressed as a woman!
We did it!


A command is a sentence that gives and order or command.  It ends with a period.


1. Wendell and Taylor, come to the office.
2. Join the army.
3. Don’t go to the right.

 


SUBJECT AND PREDICATE

Statements can be divided in two parts: subject and predicate.

Subject is the part of the sentence of which something is said.  The answer to the question “who are we talking about in the sentence?”  is the subject.

Predicate is the part of the sentence that tells something about the subject. The answer to the question “what do we say about the subject?”  is the predicate.

1. The principal called Wendell and Taylor to the office.


Who called Wendell and Taylor to the office?
The principal
What do we say about the principal?  Called Wendell and Taylor to the office.


2. The soldiers could not believe Mulan was a woman.


Who could not believe that Mulan was a woman?
